Minnesota is a national leader in clean, renewable-based fuels. Currently, Minnesota leads with an E85 fueling network of more than 335 retail and fleet stations. An estimated 175,000 flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) are registered in the state. With more Minnesotans buying FFVs and E85 station grants improving availability, the state is using 20-25 million gallons of E85 each year. In 2007, Minnesota's state fleet used 412,000 gallons of E85 (6.5% of its gasoline use).
Beginning in the fall of 2005, all diesel fuel sold in Minnesota was required to contain 2% biodiesel by law. In 2008, Minnesota passed a new mandate to incrementally increase to B20 by 2015, beginning with B5 in May, 2009. Reducing particulate pollution is a major national priority
for the American Lung Association. Minnesota's move to B20 will reduce particulate pollution from diesel emissions by 12 percent. In addition, since 1997, virtually all Minnesota gasoline has been blended with 10% ethanol.
