Nitrogen oxides are any of several oxides of nitrogen most of which are produced in combustion and considered to be atmospheric pollutants. Examples include nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and nitrous oxide. Nitrogen oxides are smog formers and can increase the risk of respiratory infection in children and permanent lung disease. May also cause pulmonary edema, pneumonitis, bronchitis, and emphysema.
